48, 47,46,45 and 44: Monday 14th -Friday 18th November 2011

Ok Ok I got really distracted with everything else and sleeping. To be honest after completing the Mage costume nothing much really happened.

Did a shift at the library without any senior staff. Had an interview for a permanent library job though I'm not entirely sure I can physically manage the hours yet. Can't remember Wednesday, and thursday was awesome hanging out with a mixture of family and friends until the evening when I nearly passed out again. The last time I was in a Red Cross building which was handy. This time I was at the PTTLS course so not so good.

This morning I'm upright and functioning enough to print sbl tickets and key rings and get together all the stuff needed for construction night.

Wish me luck and lucozade :P

Maybe I should get a camcorder? or one of those extreme sports ones you can attach to a helmet/hat. Then again my last big purchase and the biggest of the year as far as I can remember has been a bit of a flop. The wii... like many I played it once or twice and now it sits there. But I have been amazingly busy and I'm not one for playing games on my tod.

Does anyone know where that phrase "on my tod" came from or just the word tod...

Also went to the gym for the first time by myself. cheated and played my DS on the bikes.

52: Thursday 10th November 2011

For once I actually have been pondering today. Many of my ponders I forget or file away for further thought later some I think about for a while.

For instance a reoccurring thought revolves around individual transport for both 'able bodied' people and those of us that need to adapt in some way or other. I mean how 'old' and demeaning are mobility scooters and wheel chairs? (Not so bad if you've got a high tech or sports chair... but still?) and how about those who just can't walk that far but can manage a bit. Would you take their walking away from them totally? how wrong is that! I can tell you any bit of freedom is worth fighting for.

The other day I caught myself designing a 3 wheeled device...vehicle... contraption... thing! Looked something like a mix between a gold bag on wheels, a wheelchair, and a moon buggy all kind of in an exoskeleton style... had a name for it too but that I'll keep to myself just in case. The big thing was it wasn't seen as an 'aid for the disabled' with all the negative connotations. anyone could use it!

I've also thought of buying a milkfloat and making it solar powered, and revisiting the sinclair C5 idea. Just never learning to drive as the cost of lessons, car, mot, parking, fuel, etc is way too high short term and the long term cost of the planet is a definite consideration. Can't someone make a car that uses CO2 from the atmosphere?

I wonder if anyone has ever thought of making a semi auto wheel chair (sports style of course) so that you can manually push yourself or use a kenetically charged motor when you're too tired? or any kind of non petrol motor I suppose.

oooh I like the idea of a motored recumbent bike... look up recumbent bike if you haven't a clue...

Score: 6/10. I also brought some stuff online which always makes me feel up to date and I'm more determined that ever to go to the gym 2 if not 3 times a week. So far that habit has eluded me.

Today was both productive and horrible at the same time.

I was up early and found 2 components to a fancy dress costume (and the shop made a pricing error so I got one really cheap. Did feel guilty but they make enough money as it is.)

Met Chris and handed over SBL tickets (we're havng an awesome xmas event - fingers crossed)

met mum and nin, had food... egg instead of ham sandwich for once.

and the horrible bit... I had my hair cut. It's a nightmare! I hate it everytime because I'm yet to find a stylist who can handle thick hair and not make me look like a boy. Oh well. Good job I have lots of hats. it's not too bad this time but as usual I can't get it to look like the stylist made it look. Oh well at least it's not a phobia... no fear involved just hatred.

'Wiisoup'.... no i didn't make tiny soup, but instead did the one thing that has me shaking! I spent cash for a wii. I've been dilemarising for months!

  • Should I get one or is it a waste?
  • Should I wait for the new one (for which there are two on the way)?
  • Does it really add exercise to gaming?
  • I could use it for SBL but there are three in the group already (But I could set up early and no one would be have to carry it)
  • If I do what combo package?

Oh this hurt my head I've abandoned the idea several ideas but now I have a wii! Phew! and guess what. It's my first ever console!

And in a very busy day I even managed to make soup! Never thought I'd be able to since peeling proper veg especially spuds just won't happen. I may be able to do a lot of things but peeling veg is not one of them. But like always I simply decided it was time to adapt.
With a tin of tinned potatoes (opening that was hard enough) and a fridge bag of carrot and swede (400g) and all the other bits like stock I soon had a soup :D Pictures will come soon. Still trying to fix my phone.

SNEAKY! BLOOMING TOMATOES!

and I mean that in both senses of the words. Seriously I have not watered them in over a week or maybe even two having pretty much put an end to the project. It didn't fail as much as I thought.

but you know whats scary... weeks and weeks ago I cut away some of the dead bits. totally brown and sqwidgy vines and leaves if you could call them that. I dropped them onto the rose bed intending to bucket them in the big clean up. But today... I find the biggest best formed tomato sat there!!!!!

30 days in and I've not done a lot have I? Well this really needs to change. I guess its because September and October are my busiest months but thats really not a good enough excuse.

Today was a little different. I saw Jurassic Park, one of my all time favourite movies on the big screen and if I'm honest the big screen really doesn't make a difference. Maybe it would on an IMAX or maybe I've seen it too much who knows. But I think I'm going to have to put away the DVD's for a while. The 'magic' really is lost when you know a movie too well. For now thats most of my collection including karate kid, mighty ducks, sister act, first contact amongst many others.

Tomorrow is hospital again but I'm thinking when I come back into town I should head to the library and start work on one of the projects rattling around in my head. the last time I did this I ended up burning patterns into wooden medalians...

  • tie die... something
  • make a viking style but funky pattern skull cap for when I'm cooking etc

The SBL Birthday and AGM!

After a hectic cake hunt I finally made it the clubs AGM only to realse I had brought the wrong rucksack!!! Epic fail. It had the awards and entire plan in there. Luckily Tom and Heather came to the rescue rushing back to the house.

Amazingly the club (Star Base Leicester the city's scifi and fantasy club) has been running for 6 years! I was only 21 when it started and thats kind of mind blowing. 6 years... ... in that time I've had 4 jobs, 3 homes and 1 operation and I'm not the only one... people have grown with the group... and trust be when we invade somewhere its a sight to see :) our biggest events reach 35 people :D

Sometimes I do wonder if anyone appreciates the club, the work and time it takes etc but then I get votes for member of the year even when I'm not included and people saying they've nothing negative to feed back they like the club as it is. That makes me smile. I did win it once and that was cool.

Me doing the hopefully not too boring AGM bit

I am amazed. Totally. It was recently suggested I might be missing some vitamins, the B12 variety in particular and this can be a major problem. Especially if you don't have a lot of meat in your diet. It can cause all sorts of things;

  • Fatigue
  • depression
  • poor memory
  • muscle aches and pains
  • tingling sensations in hands and feet
  • irratability
  • and of course at the extreme end of the scale severe and irreversible damage, especially to the brain and nervous system

there's plenty more symptoms and I should have noticed sooner. The bloods have been sent off but looking at my diet and the symptoms I'm definately missing something so I've started taking a multivitamin. Just a cheap supermarket one but already (day 2) I can tell the difference. I feel 'awake' again for the first time since the op if not before hand.

But hold on a second. Anyone who know's me will know I'm not a fan of 'medication' and artificial sources of such things. So while these are fixing the problem I intend to fix my diet. For those that are interested B12 is found in;
  • fish and shellfish,
  • meat (especially liver),
  • poultry,
  • eggs, (but they also contain a factor that blocks absorption)
  • milk,
  • and milk products.
  • Certain insects such as termites contain B12 (Hell no!)

Here's a table from the site I linked back up at the top.

I can work with that...

Went to two new places in Leicester. A posh cafe place called le bistrot pierre in town, and I tried brioche and it tasted like... ...  ... bread. The first double post and in fact thats a good thing!

Seriously, I've actually managed to join the gym and go without wimping out. It made me feel slightly brave and I'm determined to keep going.

This on top of getting up at 6 for the first time in ages absolutely exhausted me! So definately going to avoid over doing it at the gym. Is it bad when a Gym's shower and even a caravans shower is better than that in your home? I reckon so. Oh well, it leaves room for an upgrade eventually.

Tip of the day:  When looking to buy or rent a place always check for spider and bug liklihood, a good shower and new windows.

I've also spent a few hours sorting many many many magic cards and tidying (does it ever end????) and often puzzling over priorities on a long to do list.

My phrase in relation to friendship and family,

"People are more important so put it down, turn it off and make the time"

The best bit was trying out team games of Magic and resisting the urge to buy a big box of boosters. Did you know magic was created by a mathmatics professor?  Anyway, it's really not wise to waste money on non essentials now-a-days. Then again if we don't have our hobbies and enjoyments what have we got? For now I'll resist. It feels like the hype of the event is in too much control for now.  My phrase when it comes to buying is

"If in doubt, don't."
It's that simple and it saves you an amazing amount of money. As does recycling things.

A day of discovery.

In the early hours of the morning, when the milkmen and postmen roam, I was out and seeking a new bus. This time I was heading to Hamilton and I tell you what, I never expected to find a library next to a tesco!

At least it wasn't in it I suppose. Totally shattered and I think I may sleep for a week so if you don't see me you know why. Not only did I discover a new place I discovered a new path. Librarian. Once I have the strength to stand all day I may well have found a new career. The sorting and tidying, helping kids with homework, and helping with PC's, repairing books, and then the event organising, library promotion, stock rotation etc. It's a job that must not be allowed to die.

  • Successfully made soft oiled eggs for lunch :D only one decided to leak in the pan
    created an AGM plan

    Left to do before sleep:
    • Sort recycling into new bags so I can use the box for planting onions
    • Wash up and make the kitchen sparkle
    • Find a pattern for sewing baby hats or just wing it
    • Create a party play list
    • Eat

and you know what's the most difficult thing of the day? The play list. My taste in music is so eclectic (thanks sister act for teaching me that word) I have no idea what to include for a party. Queen is a given. Or is it too cliché? Firefly theme tune? Busted? Celebration? I think I may be out dj'ed on the night.

    *yawn*

I’m bit late posting today because I got very distracted with a craft project. As many will know I have a lot of scrap material about the house. Especially ripped jeans and I’ve been trying to figure out a way to use them for some time… and today it struck me! With living in an old house we have many draughts. So we needed a draught excluder!

    Problem one
    Problem two

    The solution

While I enjoyed seeing this finished it is a rather... excess use of the material. In fact it's to wide I used not so scrap material in it.  A tape measure or template might work better next time. But I only need one so no matter. One trouser leg with pockets sewn up so bugs don't 'nest' and no more scraps!

Score 7.5/10: things are finally getting fixed though I doubt I'll be fixing the letter box. It's painted to the door!

Having spent the entire day thinking it was Tuesday I'm surprised how productive it was. Didn't miss a thing! rolling D20's all day :D

A brief trip to the hospital (and the discovery off Fibromyalgia which would explain a lot) and then I was out to roam town looking for boxes. Magic boxes. just the right size for many many cards. Alas I came up short and didn't find any. There's no way I'm spending £4 on a cardboard box! Would you?

It was the meeting at the Phoenix Square which made this an excellent day. They have graciously announced they will home Star Base Leicester for another year. How awesome is that! This place is the ultimate cinema. They're even going to put Jurassic Park on the big screen.

Yesterday I was 14 years old accoring to a retail assistant. Today I was 20 according to a doctor...I'm actually 27! oh well it was not as bad as getting I.D'd for Twilight or ice cream...

In this weeks tournament (Magic the gathering) I came 12th out of 25. Not bad but the best bit was that I didn't feel totally defeated when I was....... welll totally defeated. I just shrugged it off as a good game and moved on :) where as it used to get to me. The bad bit was I brought 4 boosters. Really should just play with the cards I have.

Back in the grown up world of reality, I've a new task to figure out, replacing the letterbox :S ... ... ...

Another day at the library and I'm begining to feel useful again :D

Ooh two sites for you today,

and the next recipe to try. I reckon it's do able... though shallots I'm guessing are onions. Hey don't judge! I know you want to but I'm not the worst out there! Somekids don't know where milk comes from!!!!!! (ok mostly in America from what you see on Jamie olivers show) And why on earth are purple onions and cabbages called 'red'???

Anyway, this challenge goes out to everyone, try the recipe, or pick a brand new recipe of your own... and if you're anything like me you'll end up making a totally new recipe by accident.

If the sign of a good day is being exhausted at the end of it... then today was amazing... but that logic doesn't quite work.

A long journey home, a wander through town, chores... now watching star gate and general TV. Best bit was waking up in a great little b&b with Tom...my special guy and fellow geek :P.

I tell you what there is some odd tv out there but we can always be saved by Top Gear right?

Helping nin pack for uni brings back memories! Moving into halls at the start of the Star Gate Season, tieing my chair to the car roof... all fun. I'm actually excited and jealous. Happy days Nin, enjoy uni :)

Other than that I'm all set for the wedding. Will blog it when I return.

    A simple day.

It is totally amazing how a good physio (aka physiotherapy) session in the gym can have you feeling all motivated and hyper... and a little sweaty. But it was worth it. I'll hopefully get rid of this limp some time soon.

I also spent a few minutes preparing for a wedding, my first ever wedding but that doesn't include the many hours spent with my sisters help looking for a dress (and shoes etc) thats right! I'll be wearing a dress for the first time since I was 6ish! Scary! and I'm sure a photo will make its way here... but thanks nin! you were great.

After all that the notorious tooth remains firmly in my head. They decided to do it on the 11th and just look at it today... oh well.

This was followed by a pointless trip to the job centre. Lunch was a silly too with mushy peas that didn't mush!

BUT!!!!!! I discovered something today. Something that changes the geek world!

The Orca whale isn't a whale! well kind of. This random magazine I was reading in the hospital called them dolphins, a little research and they are whales that belong to the dolphin family... And how many times have we all said, "the whale one" when talking about a particular star trek movie. We're only half right.

And did you know how to tell the difference between sharks and dolphins? Watch their 'tail'. Sharks go side to side and dolphins... .... you'll guess it.

I am in shock! Two good days in a row with only a little annoyance (chores and a url headache).

This morning I did my first shift as a library assistant and was amazed at how community orientated Highfields library is. Learning all the processes that make a library work is fascinating.

This I followed up with a local Magic tournament (magic the gathering that is). But disaster nearly struck!!! With an hour to go I discovered it was a standard tournament and most my cards didn't qualify!

Luckily I was convinced to buy a deck there and then, and quickly add a few of my own cards that did qualify, and you know what? It was kind of worth the £11(ish) as I came 7th out of 25 and there was some serious players! Well 'chuffed' and very shocked. Got a funky card too... Sun Quan, lord of wu.

Even caught up with an old relative so an epic win for the day.

Wow. This is a day I liked!

Skill up: My first day training as a library assistant was not as scary as I thought it would be and the computer system is amazingly similar to stuff I've already worked with, and I can't wait for tomorrow, my first day at Highfields Library.

Discovery: Did you know that Grimsby Chippy on Welford road has invented Dry salt and vinegar? Very nice taste to it and I don't even like vinegar. Yet I haven't the foggiest how they did it... ...

Lot's of my to do list went wrong (thanks to local and big government) but nothing can beat learning something new.

Today is a chilled day. Collected first and only batch of tomatoes from the great tomato experiment (too many bugs to continue), created this blog and reassembled 2 consoles and a tv all before breakfast...
